songs of the week // august 25th, 2017

This week I’m listening to:

Kesha_-_Rainbow_(Official_Album_Cover)

Hunt You Down // Kesha

Naturally, I’m still listening to Rainbow. Hunt You Down is the song that surprised me the most off this record. It’s has a 50’s country / Johnny Cash vibe to it, which is incredibly unique in comparison to the music of today.

Galway Girl // Ed Sheeran

Another one of my favorite releases of this year was Ed Sheeran’s Divide. I still find myself listening to this on repeat for a few days at a time.

Just a Girl // No Doubt

Gwen Stefani was one of the first artists to inspire me. I’ll never forget when she stormed onto the scene in 2004 with her solo debut Love. Angel. Music Baby. At first, I didn’t know she fronted an alt rock band, but when I did she became one of my idols & that’s never changed. If I could pick a theme song to play for my life, it would undoubtedly be Just a Girl.

Savage // Lights

Lights has been one of my favorite artists since high school & continues to prove herself incredibly unique with the upcoming release of her new album. Skin & Earth is slated for a release late next month, it is a concept album with a comic book companion. The releases so far off Skin & Earth for me have been hot & cold. However, due to it being a concept album – I’m not losing hope. I’m anticipating hearing how the songs will intertwine with one another. Much like when I listen to Pink Floyd – I cannot bring myself to listen to one or a few songs at a time, I need to listen to everything at once. The effect isn’t as beautiful. Bonus: if you’re a Twenty One Pilots fan, this track features Josh Dun on drums.

Woman // Kesha

2017 is continuing to prove itself as a year for great pop releases. Early last month, Kesha announced her newest single Praying, shortly followed by the album Rainbow. Rainbow is being described as the album Kesha always wanted to release – it fuses country, rock, & typical Kesha dance hits in complete symphony. If you are a fan of Kesha without auto-tune, give Rainbow a listen. Rainbow even contains far less auto-tune than Warrior. Woman has officially become my personal new girl power anthem, it is one of the stand out tracks on the album.

Hymn // Kesha

A bonus since I skipped out on last week (& because Rainbow is 🔥🔥). Yet another empowering track from Kesha, another go-to track for when I’m feeling less than myself. I know that I’m perfect / even though I’m fucked up / Hymn for the hymnless / don’t need no forgiveness.

Clairvoyant // The Story So Far

My old fave of the week is one of the Story So Far’s best-known songs, an acoustic dream featuring the famed lyrics don’t paint me black when I used to be golden.

Two Ghosts // Harry Styles

Not gonna lie, when I heard Harry Styles was releasing a solo album I rolled my eyes a bit. I wasn’t sure what to expect & was hoping it wouldn’t be bubblegum pop. Harry & Zayn were the stand out members of One Direction, in my opinion. I was absolutely stunned when a few of these songs popped up on the Ed Shreeran station on Spotify. It was nothing close to my expectations. The soft rock & acoustic sound has such a Rolling Stones / 70’s vibe to it, even if this wasn’t Harry Styles – I’d still be listening.

Cherry // Lana Del Rey

I couldn’t help but to list this weeks fave song off Lust for Life, I’m officially putting Lana is on hiatus from songs of the week.

Novacane // Frank Ocean

One of my all-time favorites, this one never gets old.

When the World Was At War Before We Kept Dancing // Lana Del Rey

This weeks list is going to be extremely similar to last week, not sorry. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Lust for Life’s release late last week means it’s everything I’ve been listening to. It truly was a battle trying to pick which song I wanted to feature this week. I bounced between Coachella – Woodstock in My Mind & Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems (because Stevie Nicks, obviously), but I settled on this track because the lyric on this record that stuck out the most to me has been Is it the end of an era? / Is it the end of America? which is just sung in such a haunting way, it will ring in the back of anyone’s mind.

Custer // Slipknot

I promise next week I won’t be featuring any Lana or Slipknot but I’m throwing in another thrash metal inspired track from Slipknot’s last record.

Alive With the Glory of Love // Say Anything

It was moody & brooding – although, before my time, I’ve grown to love the darkness of early 2000’s pop punk. Say Anything, as well as Four Year Strong & New Found Glory are what I consider the holy trinity of this time. When the latest wave of pop punk hit the scene around 2010 I was initially turned off by the sound that had developed but I grew to love both & learned that pop punk really isn’t as happy-go-lucky as I had originally thought. Say Anything’s …Is A Real Boy, in my opinion, is one of the best pop punk albums of all time.

Summer Bummer // Lana Del Rey feat. A$AP Rock & Playboi Carti

Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life has easily been one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2017 – & for good reason. With collabs with from A$AP Rocky to Stevie Nicks & Sean Lennon – there’s a little bit of something for everyone. I’ve personally been following Lana since her debut & she’s been a joy to watch grow as an artist. There isn’t another artist today like her. I’ve only listened to the album once & it’s incredible, every song is great. If you were a fan of Honeymoon and Born to Die, this album is very similar to those aesthetics with more of a hip-hop and acoustic edge. My favorite right now is Summer Bummer, but I’m sure that’ll change the more I listen to it.

Gematria (The Killing Name) // Slipknot

As I said a few weeks ago, metal has grown on me but Slipknot has really grown on me. I think what draws me to Slipknot the most is the lead singer, Corey Taylor. Diverse is almost an understatement to describe him, Corey can go from angry, growling metal vocals to moody brooding alt rock songs such of Through Glass from Stone Sour. (Just a note, he has the second widest vocal range out of all popular artists at 5 & a half octaves) Corey’s vocal range & political outrage seeps through my speakers with Gematria and I love it. This has been on replay for me the last couple weeks & quite frankly, I need to expand my horizons & discover more Slipknot songs.

Teenagers // My Chemical Romace

The Black Parade is by far one of my favorite records of all time. Even upon it’s release at the age of 10, I could tell there was something extrodinary about this record. Teenagers is one of my absolute favorite songs off not only the record, but all time.

Feels // Calvin Harris feat. Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, & Big Sean

Thankfully Calvin Harris dropped his new album just in time for the start of the summer. I’m very selective when it comes to dance or EDM, but Calvin Harris is one of my absolute favorites. Feels was featured in a SnapChat filter before the album release & the beat caught my attention right away – it’s what you’d imagine playing in the background while driving around with the windows down on a gorgeous summer day. Plus, I’m a sucker for any song with Pharrell. Be sure to check out to Slide feating Frank Ocean & Migos while you’re at it.

Some Unholy War // Amy Winehouse

When Amy Winehouse first came onto the US scene a decade ago, her raw talent with vocals & writing was obvious. Back in 2007, I couldn’t appreciate it. A few weeks back, I finally got around to watching the documentary based on Amy’s life simply titled, Amy. The movie was incredibly moving & sad but it also reminded me how amazing her music was. I could’ve included the entire Back to Black album on this list, but I went with my favorite song from it.

Satisfy My Soul // Bob Marley & the Wailers

For my old favorite of the week, I’m going with one of my favorite artists & summertime songs.

♬ Tune in next week to see what I’ve been listening to ♬

Hey everyone, I’m so excited to be starting a new series today! Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember & like everything else while in college, it totally fell off my radar. As a way of introducing myself to new music, I’m starting this series. It’s going to feature one or two new songs I’ve been liking over the past week & an old favorite. 22 facts about me //

Hello everyone ♡ Today I’m celebrating 22 years of life (as best I can, I’m moving Saturday) & thought I would share 22 facts about me! I’ve never done a get to know me post, so this is the perfect time.

Continue reading “22 facts about me //”

Hey beauties, I’m back! I apologize for my unannounced absence but life got very crazy after graduation. I was basically trying to figure out my entire life – which got super overwhelming & unfortunately I cut out blogging & making videos to reduce some stress until I got some things in order.

As you could guess, I’ve figured (some) things out. I’m currently living in Pittsburgh but that’s soon going to change! Every opportunity that’s given me slight hope has closed right in my face. I got my lease renewal for my apartment at the beginning of the month & I checked ‘moving out’. In a way, I wish I was heading off to some exotic land, but I’m moving back in with my parents. I’m not upset about it, it’s what I have to do right now. The best part is that I’m going to be living in the middle of a forest & I get to be with my family. I’m going to miss convenient shopping & bountiful vegetarian options, but hey that’s what the internet is for.

I bet you’re wondering career wise what I’m going to do. Well, I have this little blog, I just purchased an iPad & stylus so I can get better at illustrating (& expand my graphic design skill set), & do freelance work. A lot of my family members own small businesses, so I should be pretty set when it comes to working.

I’m just ready to make things happen because it’s been so difficult going from working my tail off every day to being completely stagnant. I honestly did not want to be starting my own business straight out of college but here I am, I’m excited to see where everything is going to take me. It may not be how I pictured it, but I’m going to be better off & that’s all that matters. Stay tuned for what’s to come, you guys will always be the first to know. ♡
