songs of the week // july 7th, 2017

Hey everyone, I’m so excited to be starting a new series today! Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember & like everything else while in college, it totally fell off my radar. As a way of introducing myself to new music, I’m starting this series. It’s going to feature one or two new songs I’ve been liking over the past week & an old favorite.

Malibu // Miley Cyrus

First off, can I just say – if you didn’t love Miley in her Dead Petz phase, you 👏 didn’t 👏love 👏 her 👏. I’ve followed Miley since she was on Hannah Montana & I honestly feel like I’ve grown up with her. This era is going to be a favorite of mine, it reminds me of when she released the Backyard Sessions in 2012, shortly before she started working on Bangerz. Pop is not my favorite genre of music but I find Miley to be a genre-bending artist. I absolutely love & admire her artistry & I can’t stress how excited I am for the music that’s coming.

Duality // Slipknot

‘Modern’ metal is quite new to me. All of my friends & coworkers from college were all metal heads & introduced me to the world of alternative & Swedish metal (i.e. Baroness, Audioslave, Ghost B.C.). Before then, the only metal I was familiar with was Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Mötley Crüe, & hair metal, that’s mostly what my parents listened to growing up. Over time I’ve realized how closely related punk & metal are. I’ve gotten more into metal over the years & Slipknot has been one of my favorites lately. I was also terrified of masks as a kid, so that could also attribute to my late blooming love of metal.

Abigail // Motionless in White

I’ve been in the pop punk scene since high school – okay, elementary school. I got hooked on Fall Out Boy, Green Day, & My Chemical Romance once they got popular & my love for alternative music has grown from there. I’ve found that the metalcore & pop punk scenes have always been closely related. However, I never got the hype about metalcore whatsoever. I suffered from teenage angst (as most had) but the screaming vocals were too over the top. Motionless in White was always one of the few that I enjoyed listening to, shout out to Spotify for reminding me of their existence this week.

♬ Tune in next week to see what I’ve been listening to ♬
